Police and the coast guard were searching Tuesday for a man off New Brunswick's east coast, after four sea kayakers ran into trouble the night before.
Rescuers said the four were kayaking near Shediac at 9:30 p.m. AT Monday when they had problems. Officials said they were not sure how the group ended up in danger.
One woman swam about a kilometre to shore to get help, while the other three people clung to a lobster buoy.
Coast guard spokesman Mike Bonin said two of the stranded kayakers were rescued but the third had let go of the buoy. A lifejacket was found in the water, but rescue officials could not say whether it belonged to the missing man. He had been wearing a lifejacket.
Several rescue boats, a Cormorant helicopter and a Hercules aircraft were searching for the missing man Tuesday.
"As the hours go on, chances are getting slimmer, but I think we still have hope that we can find him alive," said Philippe LeBlanc, an officer with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
