Learn to Roll Your Kayak with Confidence
1-to-1 kayak rolling coaching for sea kayakers, touring paddlers and whitewater paddlers
A reliable kayak roll changes how you paddle.
It gives you confidence in deep water, helps you recover quickly from capsize, and allows faster progression towards more challenging sea kayaking, touring and whitewater environments with greater control, extending your paddling.
If you want to paddle further from shore, handle rougher water, explore rock gardens, practise surf, develop advanced sea kayaking skills or simply stop fearing the capsise, learning to roll is one of the most important steps you can take.
This is a core paddling skill that will change what you can do on the water.
Why Learn to Roll?
Your first defence against a capsize should always be good judgement, solid boat control and effective support stroke.
If your sup[port stroke fails and you go over, a reliable kayak roll gives you the fastest recovery route without leaving your boat.
A good roll can help you:
- Recover quickly from a capsise.
- Stay with your kayak and paddle.
- Reduce time spent in cold water.
- Build confidence in deep water.
- Paddle more confidently in wind, waves and moving water.
- Progress towards more committing coastal journeys.
- Develop the confidence needed for rock gardens, surf zones, caves and exposed coastlines.
- Improve your overall boat control and body awareness.
- Become a calmer, more capable paddler.
For sea kayakers, touring kayakers and whitewater paddlers, rolling is one of the clearest dividing lines between hesitation and progression.
Private 1-to-1 Kayak Rolling Coaching
This is a personalised 1-to-1 kayak rolling session, focused entirely on you.
Unlike a group course, your coach can see exactly what is happening with your body position, paddle angle, hip movement, head position and timing.
That means faster diagnosis, clearer corrections and more focused progress.
Your coach will help you identify:
- Why your roll is failing.
- Which part of the movement needs correcting.
- How to use your body more effectively.
- How to relax while inverted.
- How to self-assess after each attempt.
- What to practise after the session.
You receive direct feedback, practical corrections and a clear route forward.
The NOMAD Sweep Roll Progression
We teach a full 360-degree sweep roll using a clear three-stage method.
1. Set-Up
You learn how to position your body, paddle and kayak before the roll begins, ensuring your set-up is firm and doesn't move with capsise. This stage builds calmness, control and orientation while inverted.
2. Sweep
You learn how to move the paddle correctly across the surface while using your body, hips & legs to rotate your kayak upright. The aim is controlled movement, not force.
3. Catch
You learn how to finish the roll with good body position, blade awareness and balance so you return upright without collapsing back into the water.
At each stage, your coach focuses on the common failure points and gives you a practical fix. This helps you understand not just what to do, but importantly, what went wrong when your roll fails.
That is how your progress continues after your coaching session.
What You Will Learn
Your session may include:
- Correct kayak fit (tight).
- Safe wet-exit awareness.
- Body position and relaxation while inverted.
- Sweep roll mechanics.
- Hip snap (flick) and boat rotation.
- Paddle angle and blade control.
- Head position and common rolling faults.
- Breathing, calmness and confidence underwater.
- Self-assessment after failed attempts.
- Rolling on your preferred side.
- Troubleshooting your existing roll throughout & coaching to that gap.
- Practical next steps to make your roll more reliable.
If a C-to-C roll is more appropriate for your boat, body mechanics or paddling background, your coach can work with that approach.
The aim is not to force every paddler into one rigid method but to develop an effective, repeatable kayak roll.
Who This Course Is For
This kayak rolling course is suitable for:
- Sea kayakers.
- Touring kayakers.
- Whitewater paddlers.
- Paddlers who have never rolled before.
- Paddlers who nearly have a roll but cannot finish it.
- Paddlers with a pool roll that fails outdoors.
- Paddlers returning after time away.
- Paddlers preparing for rougher water, surf, rock gardens or exposed coastlines.
- Paddlers who want more confidence after a capsise.
You should learn in your own kayak and equipment, which is strongly recommended if you already own suitable kit. If needed, you can schedule the use of NOMAD equipment when booking.
Course Format
Your kayak rolling session is structured to maximise learning without overloading you.
Session length
- 3 hours total.
- 2 hours on the water.
- 1 hour introduction, bank-based coaching & debrief.
- Short breaks for a cuppa & biscuit are taken.
Two hours of practical rolling is plenty.
Rolling is physically and mentally demanding, especially when you are repeatedly inverted. This format gives enough time for real progress while avoiding unnecessary fatigue.
Daily session times
There are two sessions daily:
- Morning session: 10:00am to 1:00pm.
- Afternoon session: 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
Please check your account dashboard for the confirmed time of your event.
Minimum age
This course is for paddlers aged 18 years and over.
What Results Can You Expect?
Every paddler is different. Your confidence, flexibility, boat fitness, body awareness, comfort underwater and previous paddling experience all affect progress.
However, with focused 1-to-1 coaching, many students make significant progress quickly.
Most students achieve a working sweep roll within approximately 90 minutes, and around 70% complete a full 360-degree sweep roll or C-to-C roll, unaided, during the session.
For some paddlers, the biggest breakthrough is not completing the roll immediately. It is understanding exactly why the roll was failing and knowing what to practise next.
Free Review Session Included
Everyone who completes this kayak rolling course is entitled to a free review session by appointment.
This gives your coach the opportunity to:
- Assess your roll after further practice.
- Identify what is working.
- Troubleshoot remaining problems.
- Correct faults before they become habits.
- Help you continue building towards a more reliable roll.
We'll support you beyond “I managed it once” towards a roll you can trust more consistently. Reliability takes practice. This review session gives you a stronger route towards that.

Wow. What a fantastic opportunity to get a roll! All communication with Nomad was swift & easy. Having a lesson 1:1 with a coach (Kurt), who knows how to teach rolling is hard to come by. The time was just right. It allowed for a thorough discussion beforehand of previous experience, & importantly covered not only physical aspects but "head/mind" aspects. We chatted about the separate parts of a roll, & linking them smoothly. This was in the warmth of the car! During the session we also covered packing a boat for an expedition plus how to empty a boat when doing a self rescue. Kurt has the skill to tweak my current way of doing things into something that worked. He quickly saw what I needed to work on legs. I have found it hard to do "hip flicks", but by using my legs-bingo. Up I came! Kurt rightly advises me to practise as often as possible. Today, 6 days later, I did. Perfect roll! Thanks so much Kurt. You gave me the time to see what was needed. PS. I took flasks of hot chocolate and my dry robe to help me warm up afterwards.
Great job Dani, well done!

Thoroughly enjoyed my one on one Eskimo Roll Session with Kurt. I had a lot of demons in my head from previous abortive attempts at rolling & after the session ended those demons where banished for good. Kurt is very methodical, calm & patient, and he needed to be, I'm sure I was a challenge. Although I didn't achieve a complete unaided roll, I got very close. What I did go away with was the knowledge and encouragement to practice practice practice, and I am determined & confident I am just a short step away from being able to complete a bomb proof roll, albeit in a comfortable & calm environment, then it will be into deep water/ real world environment for the next stage of my development. Thank you Kurt, See you again soon Coach
Thank you Mark; practice, practice, practice!
