NOMAD Entomology Club - Members Field Morning
NOMAD Entomology Club - Members Field Morning
A morning of field collecting coastal insects of all Orders and Families. Suitable for beginners & those new to Entomology.
We meet at the agreed-upon venue (main car park), gather for a brief, and answer any questions. Then we set off to a sandy area on the shores of the Deben estuary. Here we find a plethora of Diptera (flies) and possibly the elusive Green Tiger Beetle (Cicindela campestris).
The second location is back at the car park, where we have a small pond, pond reeds, woodland and grassland. Here we find butterflies (Lepidoptera), dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata).
And if time allows, we'll visit the shingle/sand beach strandline and look for;
- Rove beetles (Staphylinidae, e.g. Cafius spp.)
- Ground beetles (Carabidae, e.g. Bembidion spp.)
- Clown beetles (Histeridae)
- Seaweed flies (Coelopidae, e.g. Coelopa frigida)
- Shore flies (Ephydridae)
- Coastal ants (Formica spp.)
- Solitary wasps provisioning burrows.
- Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas)
- Grasshoppers (Chorthippus spp.)
