Course Overview

This course bridges the critical gap between field collection and laboratory identification. Students learn how to process samples properly, preserve material and begin structured identification using a stereo microscope.

Bench Setup & Workflow

  • Setting up a clean sorting workspace
  • Safe ethanol handling
  • Using white alcohol trays
  • Managing mixed samples
  • Separating taxa efficiently
  • Labelling standards (date, habitat, grid reference)

Microscopy Fundamentals

  • Setting up a stereo microscope
  • Understanding magnification ranges
  • Lighting: reflected vs transmitted
  • Manipulating specimens safely
  • Recognising Order-level characteristics
  • Introduction to Family-level traits

Preservation Techniques

  • Ethanol preservation protocols
  • Dry storage preparation
  • Temporary storage solutions
  • Preventing mould and specimen degradation

Working Smart at the Desk

  • Avoiding eye strain
  • Organising specimen batches
  • Maintaining data accuracy
  • Preventing cross-contamination
  • Workflow efficiency tips
