Discover the fascinating world of insects in this practical & engaging Introduction to Field Entomology. Designed for gardeners, photographers, naturalists, wildlife enthusiasts & curious beginners, this affordable day course opens the door to one of the most diverse & rewarding areas of natural history.
Working in a small group, you will learn how professional entomologists observe, collect & begin identifying insects in the field. Through guided demonstrations & real specimen examination under a stereo microscope, you will gain practical insight into insect anatomy, the major insect groups, and the essential techniques used to study them.
During the course, you will learn:
• What defines an insect and how to recognise the major insect orders
• Simple field collecting methods, including sweep netting and habitat searching
• Safe handling and observation of live specimens
• How microscopes are used to examine insects in detail
• The basics of insect identification and specimen preservation, including pinning.
This introductory session offers remarkable value, with access to specialist equipment & professional natural history not usually available outside universities or museums. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and an interest in the natural world.
For those who wish to go further, this course also serves as the starting point for our Foundations of Field Entomology programme & specialist workshops, where students can develop deeper identification skills, learn specimen-preparation techniques & explore advanced insect study.
