Polar Expedition Sea Kayak Preparation Course
Prepare with confidence for kayaking on your Arctic or Antarctic expedition cruise
You have invested thousands of pounds in the expedition of a lifetime.
Do not leave the kayaking part to chance.
If your Arctic or Antarctic cruise includes guided sea kayaking, you need more than excitement. You need enough practical skill, confidence and safety awareness to step into the kayak prepared, calm and ready to enjoy the experience.
The Polar Expedition Sea Kayak Preparation Course is a personalised sea kayaking training day designed for people preparing for kayaking excursions on Arctic, Antarctic and other cold-water expedition cruises.
This is not a general beginner kayaking lesson.
It is focused preparation for expedition cruise passengers who want to arrive better prepared, more confident and more capable on the water.
For more than 21 years, NOMAD Sea Kayaking has helped individuals and couples prepare for sea kayaking adventures in some of the world’s most spectacular wilderness destinations.
Do Not Let Lack of Preparation Spoil Your Expedition
A polar expedition cruise is a major investment.
The last thing you want is to arrive onboard and discover that you feel anxious, uncertain or underprepared when the kayaking opportunity arrives.
Common concerns include:
- “Will I be confident enough to get in and out of the kayak?”
- “What happens if I capsize?”
- “Will I understand the guide’s safety instructions?”
- “What should I wear for cold-water kayaking?”
- “Will I be able to control the kayak in wind?”
- “What skills might the expedition operator expect me to have?”
- “What if I miss out because I am not prepared?”
This course is designed to reduce those worries before you travel.
You will not become a polar sea kayaking expert in one day, and we will not pretend otherwise.
But you can arrive far better prepared, with practical experience, better understanding and more confidence than if you simply turn up and hope for the best.
The Outcome: Arrive Prepared, Calm and Ready
By the end of your Polar Expedition Sea Kayak Preparation Course, you should have a much clearer understanding of what to expect from guided kayaking activities in cold-water expedition environments.
You will work towards:
- Greater confidence handling a sea kayak on land and on the water.
- Better understanding of basic sea kayak equipment.
- Safer entry and exit techniques.
- Improved paddling control and manoeuvring.
- Practical knowledge of capsize and wet-exit procedures.
- Understanding of assisted rescue principles.
- Clearer awareness of cold-water clothing systems.
- Better communication using paddle, hand and verbal signals.
- Improved confidence in windy or exposed-feeling conditions.
- A personal readiness review before your expedition.
The aim is simple:
Help you arrive at your Arctic or Antarctic kayaking adventure better prepared, safer, calmer and ready to enjoy the experience fully.
Built Around Your Expedition
Your course is tailored to your upcoming trip.
Before your training day, we will ask about your expedition destination, departure date, current experience and any specific requirements or concerns.
This allows us to shape the day around what matters most.
Your training may be adapted for:
- Arctic expedition cruises.
- Antarctic expedition cruises.
- Greenland kayaking excursions.
- Svalbard sea kayaking trips.
- Patagonia or cold-water expedition travel.
- First-time sea kayaking passengers.
- Couples preparing together.
- Novice paddlers wanting confidence before departure.
This is personal preparation, not a one-size-fits-all group course.
The NOMAD Polar Kayak Readiness Method
Your training follows a practical readiness approach developed from more than two decades of sea kayaking coaching and guiding experience.
1. Understand the equipment
You learn how sea kayaks work, how to adjust them, and how to use key equipment correctly.
2. Build basic control
You practise the essential paddling skills needed to move, stop, turn and control the kayak more confidently.
3. Prepare for safety scenarios
You learn what to do if things go wrong, including capsize awareness, wet exits and assisted recovery principles.
4. Improve expedition awareness
You gain a better understanding of wind, weather, cold-water clothing, communication and risk management.
5. Review your readiness
You finish with clear feedback on your strengths, areas to practise and practical next steps before departure.
This gives you a structured route from uncertainty to better preparation.

Why Train Before You Travel?
Your expedition operator may provide briefings and guidance onboard, but that is not the same as arriving with practical experience.
A preparation course gives you time to practise in advance, ask questions, make mistakes safely and build confidence before the pressure of the actual trip.
This matters because once you are onboard, time is limited.
Conditions may change quickly. Opportunities may be weather-dependent.
And you want to enjoy the kayaking, not spend the whole time feeling anxious.
Training before departure helps you make the most of the opportunity you have already paid for.

Our Confidence Commitment
We understand how important this expedition is.
If your coach believes there are areas that would significantly benefit from further practice before departure, they will explain this clearly and give practical recommendations.
The goal is not to flatter you. The goal is to prepare you properly.
You should leave with a better understanding of what you can do, what still needs work and how to continue preparing before you travel.
Limited Seasonal Availability
Polar expedition preparation courses are delivered in limited numbers each season.
Because this course is personalised, and because suitable training days depend on coach availability, weather and your departure timeline, early booking is strongly recommended.
Do not leave this until the final few weeks before travel.

It was a fantastic day altogether! I had the best time – really enjoying a day's paddling & at the same time learning all the basic skills I need. Kurt prepared a Coaching Session Plan based upon my overall objectives - and the specific skills I would need on my Antarctic trip. Everything was covered thoroughly – both the beach based theory and then in the water. I found Kurt’s coaching style to be friendly, professional & supportive. His instruction was well paced, and he made sure I had a good grasp of everything. I know I need to practice more, but now, I have the confidence to do just that, and build on the skills I learned with Kurt.
Thanks Lindi, looking forward to photos from your trip later this year.
