NOW including our newly developed 'Socially Distanced (COVID-19) Assisted Recoveries'.
This is the ideal sea kayaking introduction course for new entrants to the sport of kayaking, particularly complete beginners with no or very little paddling experience.
The objective of this programme is to give the participants a good, clear and realistic understanding of what paddle sports are all about. We'll paddle on flat, non-tidal water so no rough conditions, swells or surf. We spend some time on the water coaching basic strokes to allow you to confidently manage and control your kayak. Finally, we'll run through an 'assisted recovery' in shallow water first and then finish off with a deepwater recovery to ensure you'll be safe when out on the water. These exercises build confidence and initially are completed in the shallows before moving into deep water. You’ll then be guided through all the considerations you need to be mindful of when purchasing a kayak, paddles, safety equipment, and clothing, all without wasting money on ‘stuff’ you simply won't need.
This course is for beginner paddlers and we use “Scupper Pro 2” sit-on-top kayaks which are very stable, fast and responsive and great for learning. Decked kayaks are available for those who require them, simply let us know when you make your booking. Participants are welcome to use their own craft if they have them and the programme lasts 6-7 hours depending on the student’s ability. We don’t exceed twelve (12) students per course with two (2) coaches so there is plenty of focus on individual needs and we take a tailored approach to all of our courses. This programme accommodates guests wishing to develop skills for kayak fishing, leisure sit-on-top kayaking, river paddling and of course tidal sea kayaking skills.
COVID 19 - This course now teaches our newly developed 'Socially Distanced Assisted Recovery' approved for use in deep, non-tidal waters!
This is one of our most popular courses and a good, fun way to get started and build your confidence.
Weather Remit: A wind of a maximum of 15 knots steady blow and this includes wind gusts. The course will be rescheduled if the wind exceeds this limit and there is further discretion on the part of the Lead Guide with all-night events. Rain, snow and other conditions don’t generally affect our ability on the water. Exceptions are sometimes made and this is at the discretion of your Coach and/or the Operations Director. Your Coach will make a decision based on the wind speed (including wind gusts) in combination with tide strength and direction, time of day or night and size of the group alongside other factors that may influence the safety and comfort of the entire group. NSK wants to get your event completed as soon as possible; please trust the judgement of your coach/Guide.

Layer your clothing for the day and the same for on the water using multiple layers of light synthetics (polyester, nylon) for breathability and a woollen base (against the skin) for warmth. Good wet footwear and a head covering. Bring plenty of snacks and a hot drink and money for the cafe. Wetsuits are suitable for this wet workshop.
Please read through your 'Trip Details' email and our website FAQ's for further advice on what to wear and bring on the day - you will get wet! We ask that you keep abreast of trip updates on our website’s relevant ‘Course’ page. Please check back here the night before your event for any updates as all Coaches will be on the water and this is the only way we will be able to communicate with everyone whilst we are working.

I had been wishfully thinking for years about kayaking but now 63 years old took the plunge on a 'now or never' basis. The Introduction to Kayaking was the best day I've had for the past 20 years. The course wasn't too hard in terms of physical activity and is doable for any 60+ year old if you have basic fitness. Don't be daunted, do it. Kurt and Becky put us through the necessary strokes, and we had time to repeat and improve them. It was pure bliss to be in the countryside watching the carp catch flies on the surface and curious ducks paddling faster than I. My brother took up kayaking last year aged 70, and built a sea kayak over the lockdown, so I'm aiming at Nigel Dennis's, Explorer 20/20 kayak https://shop.seakayakinguk.co.uk/collections/special-kayaks/products/explorer-50-50-18693, all I need is a mortgage to get it.
As our course had been delayed for months because of the pandemic, Becky and Kurt were champing at the bit to get us on the water. However, it was not to be - in the end the wind wouldn't allow it. Despite it being a "dry" introduction I thoroughly enjoyed it and strangely enough it still whet my appetite to learn kayaking, not least because Becky and Kurt are so passionate about what they do. Anyway, these two being the pros that they are, they have rearranged a session for us all on the water which will happen very soon. I'm really looking forward to it and intend to join up for a year so that I can go on lots more trips and learn how to kayak properly. Can't recommend these two enough.
Alison, thank you so much for your lovely review and we are glad that you found that the course (part 1!) was of value to you. We're looking forward to getting you near the water for Part 2! We'd love to have you join us as a Member, take a look at the different levels of membership and if you'd like to chat through them or have any questions please let us know. Looking forward to seeing you again in the very near future. Best regards, Becky NSK
Fantastic day never tried before was going to love or hate, I wasn't very good however Kurt and Becky were fab very encouraging getting out of kayak to get my paddle strokes right, was concerned about capsizing exercise but was fine. Haven't laughed so much in ages and gave it my best shot really enjoyed myself and will try another adventure with them All I can say is cold!! Layers are the key put enough on till you can just do your coat up that's enough😂 thanks guys Love Derek and Lara.
Thank you guys! You both were great fun, embraced the elements and threw yourselves into it. Perfect students and we'd love to see you again soon, keep in touch! We'll be posting more photos on Facebook and Instagram so keep an eye out :) Becky
