Sustainable Practices: How Our Off-Grid Glamping Site Minimizes Environmental Impact.

At Hollyhocks Eco Retreat, we're committed to creating a sustainable & eco-friendly experience for our guests. Our off-grid glamping site, nestled amidst the serene beauty of the UK's coastal landscape, is not just a place to escape the hustle & bustle of city life; it's a testament to our dedication to minimising our environmental impact while providing an unforgettable outdoor experience. In this blog post, we're excited to share with you the key sustainable practices that set our glamping site apart.

Key Sustainable Practices at Our Glamping Site:

  1. Water Conservation:

    • Water is a precious resource, especially in the natural environment where we operate. At our glamping site, we prioritize water conservation by collecting rainwater through water butts & water tanks placed strategically across the premises.
    • This harvested water serves multiple purposes, including watering plants, cleaning facilities, and even providing water for basic washing needs, significantly reducing our reliance on external water sources.
  2. Composting Toilets:

    • We proudly feature full composting toilets at our site, promoting a closed-loop system that minimises waste & nurtures the surrounding ecosystem.
    • Urine is separated & diluted with water as a nutrient-rich fertilizer for plants throughout the site, contributing to healthier vegetation & reducing the need for chemical fertilisers.
    • Solid waste undergoes a meticulous 'hot' composting process for two years, resulting in nutrient-dense compost that enriches the soil in our garden and flower beds.
  3. Hot Compost Bins:

    • Our commitment to sustainability extends to waste management practices, including the implementation of hot compost bins across the site.
    • These compost bins utilize standard compost materials such as leaf litter, creating a rich compost that nourishes our organic vegetables grown in our on-site garden.
  4. Sustainable Firewood Sourcing:

    • Keeping warm by the fire is a cherished part of the glamping experience, but we ensure that even this aspect aligns with our sustainability ethos.
    • All of the firewood used at our site is harvested directly from our premises, hand-picked, processed, and cured for a minimum of a year before use, ensuring responsible & sustainable forestry practices.
    • We plant 800-1000 hardwood saplings & hedging every year, feeding the future of our tree growth for generations to come.
  5. Greywater Recycling:

    • We've implemented innovative greywater recycling systems to minimise water wastage & maximise efficiency.
    • Drainage water from our showers is carefully collected & pumped into flower beds located up to 30 meters away from the outdoor shower unit, nourishing plants and minimising water wastage.
  6. Wildlife Conservation:

    • At Hollyhocks, we believe in living in harmony with nature & nurturing the biodiversity around us.
    • To protect local wildlife, cordoned off areas for our customers & this provides freedom of movement for the wildlife, ensuring access for deer & other large & small mammals around our perimeter by avoiding the use of fencing.
    • We've installed bird feeders at various heights across the site & installed nest boxes to accommodate everything from small songbirds to large predatory owls, fostering a thriving ecosystem.
  7. Planting for the Future

    • We are dedicated to enhancing the natural beauty of our glamping site by planting hardwood saplings & hedges throughout the premises, including 2.5 acres of land neighbouring.
    • These plantings not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the site but also serve as important habitats for local wildlife, promote soil stabilisation, and contribute to overall biodiversity conservation.
  8. Organic Vegetable Garden & Free-Range Chickens:

    • Our commitment to sustainability extends to our food production practices. We maintain an organic vegetable garden on-site, where we cultivate a variety of fresh produce using eco-friendly methods & our own fertilisers whilst recycling all of grey our water.
    • We care for our own free-range chickens, allowing them to roam and forage freely. Our happy hens provide us with nutritious organic eggs, which we proudly supply to our guests, ensuring they enjoy the freshest and most sustainable ingredients during their stay.

Since surfing with the pros as a kid in Durban South Africa on my hollow 12ft barge & getting absolutely trashed, I was hooked on sea paddling. Over a period of forty-two years I’ve surfed, white watered & sea kayaked in locations around the world. I've guided as a full-time professional for the past nineteen years & my journey continues.
