Recessed Deck Fittings
Make sure you check all of your recessed deck fittings (RDFs) to ensure they are secure and will hold your weight when doing recoveries. It's imperative that you have adequate deck lines all round your kayak to ensure you can safely and securely hold on to your kayak when you're in the water in rough conditions. Ensure you can easily get your fingers under your deck lines quickly and a small (solid) rubber ball attached to your deck line will separate it from the deck making it easier to get your fingers under and around the chord itself.
And finally, don't be afraid to rig a separate deck line where you may need it for your recoveries. Next time you practise your deep water recoveries, see where an extra deck line across your deck may be helpful in assisting your scrambling up the back deck or rolling yourself into the cockpit with an assisted recovery. Make it as easy as possible for yourself and always minimise the amount of loose items you carry on the deck - they just end up in the water and floating away when doing rough water work.
